Your furnace or boiler has to work hard to keep your home warm in these cold temperatures – and there’s a lot more winter to go!

How can you help? Ensure that your filter is clean and that snow is cleared away from the intake, allowing your furnace to breathe easy. Keep your thermostat set at a comfortable temperature. Open supplies and returns so that your furnace has proper airflow.

Any questions or concerns? Give us a call.

2 questions come up often – Should there be a screen on my furnace intake? And Should I cover my air conditioner in the winter? The answer to both is NO.

Your furnace intake pipe may get debris in it at times, this can be easily cleaned out. If you have a screen over it, your furnace may not get enough airflow. Screens make it easy for spiders and bees to create nests that block the venting.  Loss of airflow will prevent your furnace from functioning properly, which may lead to expensive repairs.

The outdoor unit of your air conditioner or heat pump is called a condenser. This should not have a cover wrapped around it during the winter.  You may put a board over the top to keep out the leaves. But a wrapped cover creates an environment for condensation to form on warmer days and for mice to make a home. Either of these situations can damage your condenser and prevent it from working properly.

Any other questions? Give us a call. Our office is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Does your hair stand up when you take your hat off? Does your skin itch? Do you hear coughing in your home? These are signs of a lack of humidity in your home and this is the time of year that our home’s air quality gets parched.   Low humidity doesn’t just affect your health – it’s hard on your home as well. Wood floors contract. Windows sweat. Musical instruments – especially stringed – tighten up.

A whole home humidifier can be mounted onto your furnace ductwork to help keep your home comfortable and your skin moist this winter.

Tame the hair. Stop scratching. Silence your cough. Enjoy the comforts of home this season.

Lp, or liquid propane, is a common option for operating heating units in our homes. It is important that you keep an adequate amount of Lp in the tank.

When an Lp tank gets too low, the gas pressure to your heating appliances also gets too low. Running low on gas pressure could potentially cause an appliance to soot and need heavy cleaning.

Whether or not you are on auto-fill with your supplier, always regularly check your tank. Unusually cold weather and more use can cause your Lp to run low quicker than normal. No matter why this happens, low Lp can cost you money.

So mark your calendar! Check your tank regularly! Stay warm this heating season!
